ROCK HILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Fort Mill man is in jail after being charged in the death of a driver in Rock Hill Friday afternoon. 

According to the Rock Hill Police Department, a collision occurred on Celanese Road at 3:17 p.m., when a Hyundai Sonata driven by Joel Laron Smith exited Interstate 77 South at a high rate of speed.

Officers allege Smith, 21, was unable to control his vehicle, which became airborne as it traveled across the Celanese Road median, colliding with a Ford Ranger. 

Smith’s vehicle continued out of control, crashing into a Toyota Sienna, which was also traveling on Celanese. 

EMS responded to the scene and transported the driver of the Sienna to Piedmont Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. She has since been identified as 43-year-old Marybeth Robinson.

Smith was arrested and charged with reckless homicide.
