CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two water main breaks in southeast Charlotte impacted traffic on Tuesday morning.

According to NCDOT, Providence Road was closed between Ferncliff Road and Sharon Amity Road. That break started around 6 a.m. on January 27.

Queen City News photojournalist Eric Johnson, who was at the scene, describes it as an ice rink in the middle of the road. Charlotte Water says to use Randolph Road as an alternate.

The other water break is in Matthews on the 500 block of W. John Street between Covenant Church Road and Matthews Township Parkway. Charlotte Water says to use Fullwood Lane or Trade Street as a detour.

Officials did not say when that repair could be fixed.

Since Tuesday morning, two other water mains broke in Charlotte, one near Kings Drive and the othe near Caswell Road. Charlotte Water says the exact causes are unknown, but freezing temperatures can put stress on water pipes.

With temperatures well below freezing on Tuesday morning, the water leaking from these breaks quickly turns to ice, making the roads unsafe.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Water reported several areas that required a water pipe repair and could cause a water outage:

  • Shamrock Drive
  • Edgehill Road N
  • Haverhill Drive
  • Autumn Applause Drive
  • Sandhurst Drive
